Andrew Stace
Managing Director: Stace Roofing Ltd

Choosing a flat roof is like stepping into a minefield. There are so many choices, and hazards at every turn. Make the wrong move, and the results could be disastrous.

I know this all too well – because every week, my team and I get called in to pick up the pieces. We’re asked to minimise the damage caused by other roofers – usually amateurs, who’ve put in the wrong type of roof or botched the installation.

So if you’re about to invest in a new slate or tiled pitched roof, it’s vital that you understand this:

Good or bad, the choices you make now will live with you for years.

At Stace Roofing we take away the risk and will deliver 100% peace of mind - guaranteed.

"It was a pleasure dealing with a Company that provides a highly professional and considerate service. I have received a number of (good) comments regarding the works from neighbours and also a note through the front door - all of whom asked who was carrying the work and for your contact details which I have passed on - I hope you get at least one enquiry from those."

Simon Barnes

"How refreshing to deal with a thoroughly professional company who understand customer service and quality work. The team treated my house as a home not a building site and nothing was too much trouble. I would have no hesitation in recommending them"

I have used Stace Roofing on two separate occasions. They are an excellent user-friendly family business who offer a... variety of roofing solutions. In 2017 the roof of a large bedroom dormer window was leaking. Stace recommended a complete flat roof replacement including 6" of insulation to bring the roof up to modern building regs. Last week the same team replaced the flat roof over the kitchen extension using a different solution. Stace will recommend the solution that suits your circumstances at the time. A friendly and efficient, independent scaffolding service is included in your free quotation. I have no hesitation in recommending the Stace family business for all your roofing requirements. They do what they say they are going to do.read more

My existing flat roof extension was nearing its life expectancy and I decided to replace the old felt with rubber and... at the same time upgrade it from a cold roof to a warm roof. I chose Stace Roofing as they were used to doing rubber installations. They were not the cheapest but to my mind offered a professional service. I was very happy with how the job was handled and the finished product, so can happily recommend them.read more

It was only a small job, a kitchen extention roof re felting, but I was treated exceptionally well by all the staff,... both in the office and the man who did the actual work.He was friendly, courteous and worked hard, while still observing the Covid 19 rules. The work he did was really neat, tidy and was done in the time specified and the whole area was left really clean. The roof looks very smart!I highly recommend Stace Roofing for their professionalism and high standard of work.read more

Slate Roofs

Natural Slate is one of the oldest roof coverings throughout history, and it's still being specified today.

This is testament to its sleek, smooth appearance and proven track record in keeping buildings secure and dry.

Even today, we are stripping off slate roofs that are 150 years old, and the slate itself is re-usable and strong enough to last another 50 years at least.

It's stunning good looks and tough finish are a winning formula that compliment buildings of all types whether old or new.

Each new roof is laid onto a solid 50mm x 25mm graded tanalised timber batten which will resist any moisture in the atmosphere, and in the worst case, any water ingress during the life of the roof.

The slates are fixed with non-ferrous fixings such as copper nails or aluminum-alloy nails that are designed to last many decades before perishing and weakening.

The old slate roofs we come across nowadays are usually failing because the nails used in the old days were not non-ferrous, which means they rot and eventually break. The timber battens are usually untreated timber and these weaken too.

This is what causes most slate roofs to fail -not the slate itself.

Laying slates, especially around detail areas such as valleys, chimneys and roof windows, is best left to the experts. It's not a case of putting a couple of nails in and hoping for the best, a good slater will spend just as long preparing and sorting his slates into different thicknesses and grades as he does fixing them onto the roof.

Special tools and practices are used when cutting and fitting around detail to ensure the slate isn't weakened and that it's going to stay put for the lifespan of the roof.

Slate Roofs, when professionally installed by enthusiastic fitters (who love nothing more than to stand back at the end of each roof and admire their own work), WILL 100% make your property look amazing.

It compliments all types of building, brick, stone, metal, timber cladded and compliments any building colour.

Add that to the fact that you will most likely never need to have this roof replaced again, it's worth doing it properly the first time.

We guarantee our slate roofs for 15 years, although we estimate that the roof should last in excess of 50 years if correctly fitted with the best materials.

  • Do you have a roof that has a lot of detail going on? Steps, parapet walls, rooflights, pipe penetrations?
  • Can you see your new roof from anywhere else?
  • A window, your garden or drive?
  • Can your neighbours see it?

We all want our houses to look as amazing as possible and you will not be disappointed with the stunning good looks of your shiny new slate roof.

We have been fitting these slate roofs since 1990 and we still always look for improvements in the fitting process every year as technology advances.

Since 1990 we have created a fitting process that is as perfect as it possibly can be.

Tiled Roofs

Tiles have been around for thousands of years with the first known clay tiles found in ancient Greece in the 3rd millennium BC.

Nowadays, tiles are still made in clay and also concrete, metal, and other man-made materials.

Tiles can give different appearances to a building depending on the colour and shape specified.

Each new tile roof is laid onto a solid 50mm x 25mm graded tanalised timber batten which will resist any moisture in the atmosphere, and in the worst case, any water ingress during the life of the roof.

The tiles are fixed with non-ferrous fixings such as copper nails or aluminum-alloy nails that are designed to last many decades before perishing and weakening.

The old tile roofs we come across nowadays are usually failing because the nails used in the old days were not non-ferrous, which means they rot and eventually break. The timber battens are usually untreated timber and these weaken too.

Tiles are also more prone to frost damage than slates which is what causes most roof failures where tiles are the covering

Because of the relatively low cost, and less tiles per sq metre than slate, tiles can often come in at a much lower outlay than slates.

They are also much faster to lay especially on bigger roofs.

So many choices. So how do you know which is right for you?

Well, you could talk to me…

Here’s the problem. It’s hard to get an independent expert opinion on this. Most experts are busy working 15 feet up in the air! So when you ask for a home visit, often as not you’ll be sent a salesman – someone with minimal training, who just wants to sell you a particular kind of roof.

Which kind? Well, whichever makes his company the most money. He’ll tell you, no doubt about it, that’s the one you need!

When he should be telling you, which roof is going to suit your property, your needs, and your budget.

I don’t like this practice one bit. So I set aside time, at either end of my working day, to visit customers at home and look at their needs in detail.

Not for the industry standard “Free No-Obligation Survey”! That’s what the sales guys use.

No, this is a full-blown consultation. I’ll take a look at your current roof – or the space set aside for a new one. I’ll check for structural issues that might affect your plans. Then I’ll hand you a full report: a written diagnostic, with independent recommendations.

By the time we’re done, you’ll know exactly how to proceed. Whether that means hiring me to do the work or not.

This Flat Roofing Consultation has a £250 value. But if you’re serious about your roofing project, I’ll carry it out for you free of charge.

Or if time is tight, I’ll send one of my expert team along.

This Is Not A ‘Luxury’ Step

We might find that your roof is good for another 5-10 years…saving you the hassle and expense of doing it now. Or we might find a minor fault that can be easily treated – so you only need a repair, not a whole new roof.
