Stace Roofing Wins the 2026 UK Solar Roofing Award

St Nicholas Leisure Centre — from first call to commissioning in just two weeks

We’re proud to announce that Stace Roofing has been named winner of the Solar Roofing Award at the UK Roofing Awards 2026 for our work on the St Nicholas Leisure Centre.

The project came with an immovable grant deadline. Generation had to be live by 29 September or the funding would be lost. Briefed by Stepnell and Step Energy in late August, our team had the complete system finished and exporting power just two weeks later.

The result speaks for itself: 292 m² of SIG Gemello Revive metal sheet, 492 m² of Solfit integrated PV, 252 panels totalling 107 kWp, and 100mm of new insulation, with every flashing and interface finished to spec. Generating within seven days, fully complete inside fourteen, and delivered with zero accidents and zero budget changes.

Public sector grant deadlines are a recurring challenge across local authority and education estates, and more often than not it isn’t the deadline that’s the problem, it’s the contractor’s programme.

Commercial Project — St Nicholas Leisure Centre, Warwick

Phase 2 — full roof design and 826 m² of refurbishment, with the centre open throughout

Following our award-winning work on Phase 1, Step Energy and Stepnell commissioned us again — this time to design the roofs as well as build them. Stace Roofing produced the full roof design for Roofs B and D at Warwick District Council’s leisure centre, then delivered every element of it.

Two roofs, two build-ups. Roof B, 550 m², took a bonded overlay: existing chippings removed, a cementitious non-combustible board laid over the prepared substrate, and a torch-applied StrataBit Rapid-O system above, with all parapets and kerbs fully encapsulated. Roof D, 276 m², was overlaid in mechanically fixed Strataplan single-ply over 80mm of additional PIR insulation, bringing the U-value to 0.18 W/m²K, finished with new profiled metal wall cladding in Goosewing Grey.

Both roofs were going under solar PV. A panel fire on a conventional bituminous build-up doesn’t stay a panel fire, so the design placed a non-combustible layer directly beneath the waterproofing — developed with the manufacturer and supported by third-party fire test evidence.

Alongside the coverings we relined and leaf-guarded the rainwater outlets, installed fixed access ladders between roof levels, and ran horizontal safety lines across both roofs. Condensation risk was assessed on both build-ups before anything was ordered. 826 m², ten weeks, and the centre stayed open to the public throughout.

If you’re planning solar on an existing roof, what sits underneath the array matters as much as the array itself. Call 01664 431370.

Domestic Project — Property Extension, Grimsby

Cupaclad Logic 101 Vertical Cladding Slate system.

In the wake of the Grenfell disaster, this fireproof system is becoming more popular on vertical cladding and rain-screen projects and this is the first project where we implemented this new system.

As one of only a handful of UK installers for this system, we were delighted to showcase the Cupaclad Logic 101 on this project. Our client needed a cladding solution that combined strong aesthetics with exceptional performance — and this system delivered both. The result speaks for itself: a striking, modern finish with built-in fire resistance and long-term durability. The before-and-after photos show just how transformative the right cladding choice can be.

The process to install is started by horizontal aluminium extruded battens being fitted to cladding rails which are attached to the main building structure. Best quality Spanish slates are then fitted to the horizontal rails to give a modern and fireproof finish to compliment both traditional and modern building styles. Bespoke trims can be created for all perimeter details and the cladding rails can be designed with various depth cavities to be filled with external insulation and firebreaks for full thermal and safety requirements.

Commercial Project — Tudor Grange Robert Smyth Academy, Market Harborough

Metal composite roof, single ply flat roofs, fall protection and solar PV — one contractor, one package

Alcema Ltd appointed Stace Roofing to deliver the complete roof package on a new classroom and science block at Tudor Grange Robert Smyth Academy. Four scopes that usually sit with four different contractors — the metal envelope, the flat roofing, the fall protection and the solar array — were handled by one.

The main roof is 980 m² of KS1000RW 150mm plastisol-coated composite panel, with eaves, barge, top edge and soaker detailing throughout in powder-coated aluminium, plus box gutters and downpipes to match.

The flat areas took 210 m² of single ply: Stratashield self-adhesive VCL, 100mm mechanically fixed PIR, and 1.5mm Strataplan reinforced PVC in dark grey under a 20-year guarantee. A further 200 m² of vertical abutment was built up in the same system over 70mm PIR and an 18mm ply deck. Aluminium copings in RAL 7016 finished the lower roof, and insulated kerbs were installed to five rooflight openings.

The array is 68 Canadian Solar 440W panels — 29.9 kWp — on a Kingspan Powerrail RW mounting system with a Fox ESS inverter and PVC-coated mesh to keep birds out from underneath. Horizontal safety lines were installed so the roof and the panels can be maintained safely for the life of the building.

Commercial Project — Alexanders Estate Agents, 21 Market Place, Melton Mowbray

Full strip and re-slate on a town centre landmark, with the shops below trading throughout

Right in the heart of Melton Mowbray, Alexanders Estate Agents occupies a landmark corner building overlooking the town’s historic Market Place. A full strip and re-slate on a site like this is as much about access and the public as it is about the roof.

Getting the project off the ground took time. Securing a scaffold and street permit for one of the busiest corners in town meant working closely with the local council from day one, and further hurdles came up along the way with both scaffold access and council approvals. Our team worked through each of them the way we always do — engaging constructively, proposing practical solutions, and keeping the job moving without compromising on safety or quality.

Before any roofing work began we arranged a full asbestos register and survey, so the works — and any future maintenance on the building — could proceed with complete knowledge of the site’s condition.

The building sits directly above a row of trading businesses and a busy public footway, so protecting the public came first. The very first task on site was netting the entire base of the scaffold, guarding against any material or debris falling onto the pavement below.

Once underway, our roofers found significant sections of ageing slate that needed replacing entirely — in part a legacy of an earlier re-roofing attempt on one side of the building that fell well short of the standard this building deserved. The team worked long days, including early starts, lifting new slate and lowering waste material by hand to keep disruption to the surrounding shops and market to an absolute minimum.

Despite the setbacks, the project was completed within our original time allowance. New slate, new lead work, and a 10-year guarantee have restored a landmark building to a standard fit for its position in the heart of the town.
